7 Functional Foods & Recipes for Gut Health and Hormone Balance

2. Seed & Oat Energy Bites

A no-bake snack packed with fiber, healthy fats, and minerals

Seed cycling is often promoted online as a natural way to balance reproductive hormones. However, clinical evidence supporting seed cycling itself remains limited.

That doesn’t make seeds a bad choice.

Flax, pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame seeds provide fiber, healthy fats, minerals, and plant compounds that can contribute to an overall nutritious diet.

These energy bites turn several of those ingredients into an easy grab-and-go snack.

Ingredients

Makes about 14 bites

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup almond butter
  • ¼ cup honey or maple syrup
  • ¼ cup ground flaxseed
  • ¼ cup ground pumpkin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon maca powder, optional
  • 2 tablespoons dark chocolate chips
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Stir until a thick, sticky mixture forms.
  3. Refrigerate for about 20 minutes.
  4. Scoop out approximately 1 tablespoon at a time.
  5. Roll into small balls.
  6. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

What About Seed Cycling?

Some practitioners recommend flax and pumpkin seeds during the first half of the menstrual cycle and sunflower and sesame seeds during the second half.

There isn’t enough clinical evidence to say this schedule reliably changes hormone levels.

If you enjoy the practice, treat it as a simple way to include more nutritious seeds in your diet—not as a substitute for PCOS treatment or other medical care.
