7 Functional Foods & Recipes for Gut Health and Hormone Balance

5. Berry Protein Smoothie

Fiber, protein, healthy fats, and antioxidants in one glass

A balanced breakfast doesn’t need to be complicated.

Combining protein + fiber + healthy fats can make a smoothie more satisfying than fruit juice or a fruit-only drink.

Berries provide polyphenols and fiber, while chia and flax contribute additional fiber and healthy fats.

Ingredients

Serves 1

  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or kefir
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • ½ banana
  • Handful of baby spinach
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon maca powder

Instructions

  1. Add the milk or kefir to your blender first.
  2. Add berries, banana, protein powder, chia, flax, spinach, and almond butter.
  3. Blend for about 45–60 seconds.
  4. Let the smoothie sit for 1–2 minutes if you prefer a thicker texture.
  5. Pour into a glass.
  6. Top with a few extra berries if desired.

Smoothie Tip

If you’re hungry again shortly after drinking a smoothie, increase the protein or add more healthy fat rather than simply adding more fruit.

6. Probiotic Yogurt Parfait

A simple breakfast combining fermented food and fiber-rich toppings

This parfait brings together probiotic-containing yogurt and fiber-rich foods.

Choose yogurt labeled with live and active cultures when possible.

The berries, oats, flaxseed, and slightly underripe banana provide different types of fiber and plant compounds.

Ingredients

Serves 1

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt or coconut yogurt with live cultures
  • ½ cup mixed berries
  • ½ small banana, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats or low-sugar granola
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon inulin or acacia fiber

Instructions

  1. Add yogurt to a bowl or glass jar.
  2. Stir in optional prebiotic fiber if using.
  3. Layer half the yogurt into the glass.
  4. Add berries, banana, and oats.
  5. Add the remaining yogurt.
  6. Finish with flaxseed and a small drizzle of honey.

Start Slowly With Added Fiber

If you’re not accustomed to concentrated prebiotic fiber, start with a small amount.

Adding too much fiber too quickly can cause gas or bloating. Increase gradually while drinking enough fluids.
